Rocket Dollar Review 2026: Self-Directed IRA and Solo 401(k) Fees, an Affiliated Custodian and What You Are Responsible For

Rocket Dollar sells self-directed IRA and Solo 401(k) accounts for a setup fee and a monthly subscription, so savers can put retirement money into real estate, private funds, startups, notes, crypto and other assets they choose themselves. It is the account administrator, not the custodian: Digital Trust, LLC holds the IRAs, partner banks hold checkbook cash, and the customer picks, executes, values and keeps compliant every investment. Since March 2024 Rocket Dollar and Digital Trust have been under common ownership, a fact disclosed in Rocket Dollar's privacy notice and its broker-dealer's audited filings but not highlighted on the pages where customers choose a plan.

What the data actually shows - TL;DR

Rocket Dollar, founded in Austin in 2018, sells the account wrapper for alternative investments in retirement money. A customer pays a setup fee and a monthly subscription and chooses one of three set-ups: a direct custody IRA, where the custodian reviews and holds each investment; a checkbook IRA, where the IRA owns a trust (or, for pre-2024 accounts, an LLC) whose bank account the customer controls and wires from without custodian sign-off; or a Solo 401(k) for the self-employed, where the customer is the trustee and cash sits in a plan bank account.

Read the full assessment

Rocket Dollar does not choose, review or hold investments: Digital Trust, LLC, a Nevada trust company, is the custodian of the IRAs, banks hold the checkbook cash, and the customer values assets each year for IRS reporting, avoids prohibited transactions and handles any crypto keys. The pricing page lists $360 to $900 to open and $30 to $50 a month, and prices the Solo 401(k) two different ways on the same page; Digital Trust's own charges apply to IRA accounts in certain situations. Three findings stand out.

Rocket Dollar was sold to WAO Fintech, LLC on March 18, 2024, and Digital Trust is a WAO affiliate, a fact disclosed in the privacy notice and the broker-dealer's audit but not highlighted on the product pages or the custodian announcement. Several documented custody and bank migrations since 2023 have affected different account types, and BBB complaints allege disruption. And the site's prices, wire terms and refund window differ from page to page. No enforcement actions or lawsuits naming Rocket Dollar were located in the stated searches; AltStreet did not open an account.

$360 to $900

Setup fees on the current pricing page (Silver $360, Gold $600, Platinum $900), with $30, $40 or $50 a month. The same page prices the Solo 401(k) both under Platinum ($900 and $50) and in a 'Checkbook IRA/Solo 401(k)' table ($600 and $40); which applies is unresolved. Older pages show $15 to $30 a month.

Mar 2024

Rocket Dollar's broker-dealer audit: 'On March 18, 2024, Rocket Dollar Inc. was acquired by WAO Fintech, LLC.' Rocket Dollar's privacy notice lists Digital Trust, LLC, its custodian, among its affiliates under common ownership or control.

You

Who is responsible in a checkbook IRA or Solo 401(k): the customer picks and wires investments without a custodian review, self-reports their value each year ('your IRA may be closed and distributed for noncompliance'), and bears prohibited-transaction risk.

Several

Documented custody and banking migrations since 2023, each affecting a different account type: direct custody IRAs from AET and IRA Resources to Digital Trust, IRA LLC bank accounts from Solera to Digital Trust's bank partner, trust and plan accounts from BankUnited to Grasshopper, and crypto investors to Titan Bank.

$35 + $300

Examples from Digital Trust's own fee schedule for IRA accounts, charged 'in addition to any applicable asset custody or platform fees' and, per Rocket Dollar's pricing FAQ, 'in certain situations': $35 per outgoing wire, $300 to close an account fully, $75 per asset to re-register. Rocket Dollar's own schedule lists a $50 termination fee, and some pages say 'No asset or transaction fees'.

FY2021

The last public financial statements, historical context only: revenue $1,379,482 and a net loss of $2,182,531 in 2021. Rocket Dollar stopped Regulation Crowdfunding reporting in May 2022, so its current finances are private.

Prices from rocketdollar.com/pricing as displayed October 27, 2026, which prices the Solo 401(k) two ways; the fee schedule PDF and the migration and in-kind pages carry other figures, some of which may be historical or grandfathered terms. Cost arithmetic is AltStreet's, from list prices; no account was opened. Ownership facts from Rocket Dollar Capital, LLC's audited statement for 2025 (filed March 31, 2026) and Rocket Dollar's privacy notice (February 11, 2025). Financials from Rocket Dollar, Inc.'s Form C-AR filings.

Quick Verdict

Is this platform right for you?

Rocket Dollar sells the account wrapper for alternative investments in retirement money, and its help center is candid that in a checkbook account no one but the customer reviews deals, values assets or watches for prohibited transactions. AltStreet did not open an account, so it cannot say how the service performs; the claims of speed and satisfied customers are Rocket Dollar's.

Read the full assessment

The weaker parts are disclosure and continuity: Rocket Dollar was sold in March 2024 to the group that owns its 'exclusive custodian', a fact disclosed in its privacy notice and SEC filings but not highlighted on the pages where customers choose a plan; its prices differ across its own pages, with the Solo 401(k) priced two ways on one page; and several migrations have moved different account types between custodians and banks, with BBB complaints alleging disruption. It suits experienced investors with large balances and a tax adviser; it is costly for small accounts and leaves first-time investors without any review of what they buy.

Best for

  • Experienced self-directed investors with substantial balances who want checkbook control, have a tax adviser, and have confirmed current fees and the custodian arrangement in writing.

Avoid if

  • You want advice or someone to review deals.
  • Your balance is small.
  • You want public securities in the same account.

Top strengths

  • Checkbook IRA and Solo 401(k) control without custodian sign-off on each deal (as described by Rocket Dollar).
  • Flat subscription with no asset-based fee.
  • Detailed help-center guidance on valuation, prohibited transactions, UBTI and UDFI.
  • No enforcement actions or lawsuits naming Rocket Dollar located in the stated searches.

Key limitations

  • Custodian is an affiliate under common ownership since March 2024, disclosed in the privacy notice and SEC filings but not on the pricing or announcement pages.
  • Prices (two for the Solo 401(k) on one page), wire terms, termination fees and the refund window differ across Rocket Dollar's pages.
  • Several custody and bank migrations since 2023 affecting different account types, with BBB complaints alleging disruption.
  • No public financial statements after 2021 (historical figures only); partner payments undisclosed; the prohibited-transactions FAQ link is broken.

Overview

Platform Overview

A concise read on what the platform is, how the structure works, and where the practical friction shows up for real investors.

Rocket Dollar, Inc. runs rocketdollar.com, an online platform for opening and administering self-directed retirement accounts. It sells three subscription levels: Silver (a direct custody IRA, where Digital Trust reviews and holds each investment), Gold (adds a checkbook IRA held through an IRA trust with a bank account the customer controls) and Platinum (adds an 'IRA LLC account' and the Solo 401(k) for self-employed people, in which the customer acts as trustee); the same page also prices a 'Checkbook IRA/Solo 401(k)' at the Gold rate, and the help center says new checkbook accounts have been set up as trusts rather than LLCs since 2024. Rocket Dollar handles onboarding, account paperwork, transfers in from other custodians and customer support; Digital Trust, LLC is the custodian of the IRAs and files their annual IRS forms (the Solo 401(k) has no outside custodian); partner banks (Grasshopper Bank, earlier BankUnited and Solera National Bank, Titan Bank for crypto investors) hold checkbook cash.

Rocket Dollar does not hold customer money, review deals in checkbook accounts, give investment advice or offer public stocks and bonds (a brokerage product is on a waitlist). It promotes about 70 investment partners, including platforms AltStreet reviews, and publishes no statement on whether they pay it.

On March 18, 2024 the company was sold to WAO Fintech, LLC, a Las Vegas group that also controls Digital Trust, LLC, the Nevada trust company now custodying Rocket Dollar IRAs, and BitcoinIRA, according to Rocket Dollar's broker-dealer filings and privacy notice. Yoshida remains CEO on the site and on the broker-dealer's filings.

What it is

An administrator of self-directed IRAs and Solo 401(k)s for alternative assets; not a custodian, bank, adviser or fiduciary.

Accounts

Silver: direct custody IRA. Gold: adds a checkbook IRA through an IRA trust. Platinum: adds an 'IRA LLC account' and a self-trusteed Solo 401(k); the help center says new checkbook accounts have been trusts since 2024.

List price (pricing page)

Silver $360 + $30/month; Gold $600 + $40/month; Platinum $900 + $50/month, or $600 + $40/month for 'Checkbook IRA/Solo 401(k)' in the same page's table (unresolved); discounts for additional accounts; Digital Trust charges on IRAs in certain situations.

Custodian and banks

Digital Trust, LLC (Nevada trust company, an affiliate since March 2024); Grasshopper Bank for checkbook cash (BankUnited and Solera earlier); Titan Bank for crypto investors.

Ownership

WAO Fintech, LLC (dba Retired.com) since March 18, 2024, per the broker-dealer's audited filings.

Not offered

Investment advice, deal review in checkbook accounts, public stocks and bonds (brokerage on a waitlist), in-kind transfers of public securities.

Investor Operations

The practical questions investors actually care about: when tax documents arrive, how cash distributions work, and whether capital can be exited before the underlying asset is sold.

Tax Documents

K-1 Timing

What to expect

Partnership investments send K-1s to the IRA or plan; UBTI filings on Form 990-T are the account's responsibility.

Cash Flow

Distributions

Frequency

Investment income flows into the account per each investment's terms.

Timing

Not set by Rocket Dollar.

Consistency

Not applicable.

Liquidity

Exit Reality

Holding period

None at the account level; each investment's own liquidity applies, and many alternative assets are illiquid.

Exit options

  • Transfer the account to another custodian (in-kind for alternative assets).
  • Distribute, with tax and possible penalties.

Secondary market

Depends entirely on the investments held.

Investment Structures

Self-directed retirement account administrator

Rocket Dollar sells accounts, not investments. The customer chooses every investment, from Rocket Dollar's partner list or anywhere else the IRS rules allow, and Rocket Dollar takes no part in selecting, reviewing or pricing it.

  • Direct custody self-directed IRA (Silver): Traditional, Roth, SEP or inherited IRA custodied by Digital Trust, which reviews and processes each investment.
  • Checkbook IRA (Gold): an IRA owning a trust (new accounts since 2024, per the help center) or an LLC (earlier accounts; still listed under Platinum) with a bank account the customer controls; no custodian sign-off on transactions.
  • Solo 401(k) (Platinum): a self-trusteed plan for self-employed individuals with Roth and traditional sides, a loan option and a trust bank account.

Risk

Risk Structure

This is where the marketplace pitch gives way to the actual operating reality: delayed exits, limited disclosure, fee drag, and path-dependent outcomes.

Custody

Digital Trust, LLC, a Nevada trust company and Rocket Dollar affiliate since March 2024; checkbook cash at partner banks.

Compliance

On the customer: valuation for IRS Form 5498, prohibited transactions, UBTI and UDFI, crypto key custody; no deal review in checkbook accounts.

Fees

Flat setup and monthly fees from Rocket Dollar; Digital Trust's transaction and termination charges on IRAs in certain situations; bank and entity costs for checkbook accounts; the Solo 401(k) priced two ways on the pricing page.

Continuity

Several custody or bank migrations since 2023 affecting different account types, and a 2024 ownership change; BBB complaints allege disruption.

Company disclosure

No public financial statements after 2021; the ownership change is disclosed in the privacy notice and the broker-dealer's filings, not on the product pages.

Compliance risk sits with you

In checkbook IRAs and Solo 401(k)s, the customer chooses, executes, values and keeps compliant every investment.

Why it matters

A prohibited transaction disqualifies the IRA under the tax code, with the account treated as distributed and, under 59 1/2, a 10% penalty. A missing valuation is a separate, custodial matter: Digital Trust can close and distribute the account under its own rules.

Mitigation / verification

Use a tax adviser who knows self-directed IRAs and keep valuation evidence each year. Direct custody adds the custodian's processing review (documentation and a basic prohibited-investment check), not an assessment of the investment.

Affiliated custodian not disclosed where customers see it

Digital Trust has been under common ownership with Rocket Dollar since March 2024, disclosed in the privacy notice and SEC filings but not highlighted on the pricing or announcement pages.

Why it matters

The same group receives the subscription and the custodial charges, handles custody complaints and is the only custodian offered; customers weighing the 'exclusive' arrangement should know that.

Mitigation / verification

Ask Rocket Dollar to confirm the ownership in writing and to provide Digital Trust's custodial agreement and full fee schedule.

Migrations and service disruption

Custodians and banks have changed several times for different account types, and BBB complaints allege frozen portals and a delayed rollover.

Why it matters

Each change requires new bank terms and updated deposit details for every investment; errors can delay payments or cause tax problems.

Mitigation / verification

Before opening, ask which custodian and bank will hold your account and what changes are planned; keep investment payment details current.

Inconsistent fee disclosure

Subscription prices (including two Solo 401(k) prices on one page), wire terms, termination fees and the refund window differ across Rocket Dollar's own pages.

Why it matters

The total cost over years, including closing an account, is hard to determine from the site.

Mitigation / verification

Get the current fee schedule from Rocket Dollar and Digital Trust in writing, including termination and re-registration fees.

Regulatory & Legal Posture

Security Status

Rocket Dollar, Inc. is not registered as a custodian, bank, investment adviser or broker-dealer. Its subsidiary Rocket Dollar Capital, LLC is a FINRA broker-dealer (CRD 314075) that has reported no revenue; its former adviser subsidiary, Rocket Dollar Advisor, Inc., ended its SEC registration in March 2025 with no assets under management. Custody is provided by Digital Trust, LLC, which the Nevada Financial Institutions Division lists as a trust company.

Self-directed IRAs must be held by a qualified custodian or trustee; the administrator's role is contractual. IRS rules on prohibited transactions, valuation and unrelated business income apply to the account holder's choices, and Rocket Dollar disclaims fiduciary status.

  • Rocket Dollar, Inc. filed Form D notices in 2019, 2020 and 2021 and Regulation Crowdfunding reports through fiscal 2021, then terminated reporting on May 4, 2022.
  • Rocket Dollar Capital, LLC's audited statements for 2023 to 2025 record the March 18, 2024 sale to WAO Fintech, LLC and Digital Trust, LLC as an affiliate.
  • No relevant actions located in the stated searches (IAPD, BrokerCheck, Nevada FID enforcement page, CourtListener federal dockets, CFPB) against Rocket Dollar or its CEO as of October 27, 2026. Meagher v. Digital Trust, LLC (D. Nev. 2:24-cv-01630), a data-breach class action concerning Kingdom Trust customers, was re-captioned against KTC Holding Company and settled for $780,000; AltStreet found nothing in it about Rocket Dollar customers.

Disclosure Quality

Mixed. The help center explains responsibilities, valuation and prohibited transactions in detail. The pricing, migration and partner pages are inconsistent on fees, do not highlight the common ownership with the custodian (which the privacy notice states), and do not say whether partners pay Rocket Dollar.

Custody Model

Direct custody assets at Digital Trust, LLC; checkbook IRA and Solo 401(k) cash at Grasshopper Bank (BankUnited and Solera National Bank earlier; Titan Bank for crypto investors); Rocket Dollar holds no customer money.

Regulatory Backing

Digital Trust: Nevada-chartered trust company (Nevada FID lists). Bank deposits: FDIC insurance at the partner banks, which covers bank failure, not investment losses.

Tax Treatment

Reporting

IRS Form 5498 (IRA values) and 1099-R (distributions) from the custodian; Form 5500-EZ for a Solo 401(k) whose assets exceed $250,000 at year end, and for the plan's final year regardless of assets; the help center says Rocket Dollar files it for Gold-level customers and Silver customers file their own, labels that predate the current tiers.

Annual; valuations self-reported by the customer.

Income Character

Tax-deferred or tax-free retirement account

Income and gains inside the IRA or Solo 401(k) are tax-deferred (traditional) or tax-free (Roth) if the rules are followed. Two taxes can still reach the account: unrelated business income tax on active business income held through pass-throughs, and tax on debt-financed income from leveraged real estate, from which a Solo 401(k) has an exception for real estate acquisition debt, subject to conditions, and an IRA does not. Rocket Dollar's help center notes the account must file Form 990-T and pay the tax from account funds.

A prohibited transaction can disqualify the IRA. Consult a tax adviser.

Limitation

AltStreet is not a tax adviser.

Special Considerations

  • Valuations are self-reported each year and must be supportable if the IRS asks.
  • A Solo 401(k) has an exception from tax on debt-financed income for real estate acquisition debt, subject to conditions in the tax code; an IRA does not.
  • Crypto held in self-custody inside an IRA rests on limited IRS guidance, as Rocket Dollar notes.

Account Suitability

Taxable

Not applicable; Rocket Dollar offers only retirement accounts.

Roth IRA

Yes, including checkbook Roth IRAs.

Traditional IRA

Yes, plus SEP and inherited IRAs.

HSA

Not offered.

AltStreet Data Layer

What the data actually shows

The filings show a venture-backed administrator that stopped public reporting in 2022 and was sold in 2024 to the group that owns its custodian.

Finding

Sold to its custodian's parent

Rocket Dollar Capital's audited statements record the March 18, 2024 sale of Rocket Dollar, Inc. to WAO Fintech, LLC, and name Digital Trust, LLC as an affiliate that paid $14,400 of its expenses in 2025.

What this means

The custodian relationship is an intra-group arrangement, disclosed in the privacy notice and SEC filings and not highlighted on the pricing or announcement pages.

Notable

Last financials are from 2021

Fiscal 2021: revenue $1,379,482, net loss $2,182,531, cash about $6.5 million; Regulation Crowdfunding reporting terminated May 4, 2022.

What this means

Historical context; the administrator's current finances are not public and these figures do not describe them.

Notable

Broker-dealer with no revenue

Rocket Dollar Capital, LLC (CRD 314075) reported no revenue in 2025 and cash of $35,874, funded by debt forgiveness from affiliates.

What this means

The broker-dealer plays no visible role in customer accounts; its figures say nothing about the administrator's condition.

Decision Fit

Investor Fit

Who this works for, who it does not, and what level of patience and complexity tolerance the platform really demands.

Experienced self-directed investors with large balances who want checkbook control and have a tax adviser

+Well Suited

Flat fees are small relative to a large account, and the checkbook structure gives the control these investors want, if they manage the compliance themselves.

Self-employed investors wanting a self-directed Solo 401(k)

~Neutral Fit

High contribution limits, a loan option and an acquisition-debt exception from tax on debt-financed income, but the customer is trustee and responsible for plan compliance, and the pricing page gives two prices for the account.

First-time alternative investors or small balances

xPoor Fit

A Gold account's $1,080 first-year cost is 4.3% of a $25,000 account, and no one reviews deals in a checkbook account.

Investors who want a second check on each deal

~Neutral Fit

The Silver direct custody IRA includes the custodian's processing review (documentation and a basic prohibited-investment check), not an assessment of investment quality or a check on fraud.

Tradeoffs

Key Tradeoffs

The attraction of pre-IPO access is real, but every benefit comes bundled with a corresponding liquidity, transparency, or pricing cost.

1

Control

No one else reviews the deal, and direct custody adds only administrative processing.

2

Cost

High relative to small accounts; custodian, bank and entity charges by structure; prices differ across pages.

3

Custody

The custodian is an affiliate under common ownership, disclosed in some documents but not on the pricing or announcement pages; several migrations since 2023.

Avoid

Who This Is Not For

This section should be read as a filter, not an afterthought. If you need income, simplicity, or near-term access to capital, the structure is working against you.

Investors who want advice or vetted deals

Rocket Dollar gives no advice, and partner listings are marketing relationships, not reviews.

Small accounts

Flat fees of $360 to $900 to open plus $30 to $50 a month weigh heavily on small balances.

Investors who want public stocks and bonds in the same account

Rocket Dollar cannot hold publicly traded securities; brokerage is on a waitlist.

Editorial View

AltStreet Perspective

The compressed version of the review: what matters, what marketing tends to obscure, and how we would frame the platform for a serious allocator.

Verdict

Rocket Dollar is retirement-account plumbing for people who want to choose their own alternative investments. AltStreet did not test the service; its help center is unusually candid about what customers must do themselves. What it does less well is tell customers who it now is: an administrator owned since 2024 by the same group as its custodian, disclosed in its privacy notice rather than on its product pages, with prices and terms that vary by page. A careful customer can use it well by confirming fees, the custodian relationship and the planned bank in writing before moving money.

Positioning

Against Alto IRA, which runs its own trust company and a curated marketplace with a broker-dealer, Rocket Dollar is a lighter administrator whose edge is checkbook control and a Solo 401(k); both now sit with an affiliated custodian. Against legacy custodians such as Equity Trust or Millennium Trust, Rocket Dollar offers faster digital onboarding and checkbook structures, at flat fees that favor larger balances.

The Bottom Line

A self-directed IRA and Solo 401(k) administrator offering checkbook control at flat fees, now under common ownership with its custodian, with the compliance burden on the customer.

Action

Next Steps

If you still want to engage after reading the review, these are the practical next moves that reduce avoidable mistakes.

1

Ask Rocket Dollar for the current fee schedule in writing, including which Solo 401(k) price applies, which termination fee applies, and in which situations Digital Trust's charges arise.

2

Ask Rocket Dollar to confirm its ownership and its relationship with Digital Trust, and request the custodial agreement.

3

Ask which bank will hold your checkbook cash and whether any custody or bank change is planned.

4

For a checkbook IRA or Solo 401(k), line up a tax adviser who handles self-directed accounts, prohibited transactions and UBTI.

5

Before investing through a partner page, ask whether the partner pays Rocket Dollar, and review the investment independently.

6

Compare first-year and ongoing cost against your account size; flat fees weigh heavily on small balances.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

High-intent search questions answered directly, without making users hunt through the full review.

Q

How does Rocket Dollar work?

You open a self-directed IRA or Solo 401(k) online and pay a setup fee and a monthly subscription. A direct custody IRA has Digital Trust review and hold each investment; a checkbook IRA or Solo 401(k) gives you a bank account you control, so you wire money to investments yourself. You choose the investments, report their value each year and are responsible for following IRS rules.

Q

How much does Rocket Dollar cost?

The pricing page lists Silver at $360 to open and $30 a month, Gold at $600 and $40, and Platinum at $900 and $50, with discounts for extra accounts; the same page also prices a 'Checkbook IRA/Solo 401(k)' at $600 and $40, so the Solo 401(k) price is unresolved. Wires cost $10 to $35, and for IRAs Digital Trust charges its own fees in certain situations, including $300 to close an account fully. Older pages show lower monthly prices, so confirm the current schedule in writing.

Q

Who is Rocket Dollar's custodian?

Digital Trust, LLC, a Nevada trust company. Rocket Dollar's privacy notice lists Digital Trust among its affiliates, and its broker-dealer's audited filings record that Rocket Dollar was sold to WAO Fintech, LLC in March 2024, the group Digital Trust belongs to. Earlier custodians were American Estate & Trust and IRA Resources, with Solera, BankUnited and now Grasshopper Bank holding checkbook cash.

Q

Is Rocket Dollar legit?

Yes, it is an established account administrator; AltStreet located no enforcement actions or lawsuits naming it in the searches it ran. BBB rates it B-, with complaints about bank changes and a delayed rollover. It is not a custodian, adviser or fiduciary; its custodian, Digital Trust, is an affiliate under common ownership, which its privacy notice and SEC filings disclose and its pricing pages do not mention. AltStreet did not open an account.

Q

What is a checkbook IRA, and what are the risks?

Your IRA owns a trust or LLC with its own bank account that you manage, so you can invest without custodian approval. The risk is that no one else checks the deal or the rules: a prohibited transaction, such as a deal with a disqualified person (your spouse, parents, children and their spouses, and certain entities, not every relative) or doing your own repairs on an IRA property, disqualifies the whole IRA under the tax code; separately, you must value the assets yourself each year, and the custodian can close and distribute an account whose owner will not.

Q

Rocket Dollar or Alto IRA?

Alto runs its own trust company, offers a curated marketplace and charges by invested capital; it does not offer checkbook IRAs. Rocket Dollar offers checkbook IRAs and a Solo 401(k) at flat fees, with IRA custody at its affiliate Digital Trust. Choose by whether you want checkbook control and how large your account is.
